On 16, 17 and 18 October 2020, James Ehnes (Canadian Violinist) performed with Houston Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Philip Herbert’s Elegy: in memoriam Stephen Lawrence and Vaughan William’s ‘The Lark Ascending.

 

The Sphinx Virtuosi, created a virtual performance of ‘Elegy’, on 18 June 2020 as a reflect response following on from the death of George Floyd. It was also presented by the Sphinx Organisation as one of the pieces that commemorated Juneteenth 2020. You can listen to it here.

 

On 10 September 2020, Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s new Music Director, Jader Bignamini, opens his tenure, with a programme of music including Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Gabrieli’s Venetian School Innovations, Serenade for Winds in Eb Major Op. 7 by Richard Strauss, Elegy in memoriam Stephen Lawrence by Philip Herbert and Ennio Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe.

The BBC commissioned a number of composers to write brief composer ‘postcard’ pieces of about 30 seconds in length: to send out a message of hope to listeners. I chose to write a piece called ‘Particles of Hope’, to focus on the work scientists are doing, to enable us to live free of Covid 19 in August 2020. It was written for marimba and performed by Alasdair Malloy of the BBC Concert Orchestra.
